Getting Started

How to get started (intake & matching)

There are a number of ways to think about finding a good match as a therapist! Using our filter, you can search by insurance type, time of day appointments are needed, focus areas, etc. All of our therapists are able to provide complimentary 15-minute consultations to ask clarifying questions and to ensure it feels like a mutually good fit and these appointments can be scheduled online at your own convenience. If we do not feel like anyone on our team is a well-suited match for you, we will see if we can come up with an adequate outside referral!

We have everyone complete an online biopsychosocial assessment before your first appointment. This asks quite a few questions related to mental health symptoms, expectations in therapy, substance use history, family background, education, vocation, medications taken, etc. We ask all clients to have this assessment complete at least 24 hours in advance of your first appointment. This allows your therapist to review the details and begin your therapy with considerable background information. We utilize the first few sessions to continue with assessment and understanding your situation and where you want to go thoroughly before jumping into interventions and coping strategies.

The timeline of therapy is individualized and we do not have a one-size-fits-all approach. Some clients will come in with a very specific acute need and via Brief Solution Focused Therapy (BSFT), there may be only about 6-8 sessions. Others have traumas or challenges to work through and that might lead to therapy lasting for a year or more. We also have folks who have been coming for several years but may only be seen infrequently for tune-ups and to keep things going in the right direction and may only require appointments every month or so. Most folks will start therapy either weekly or biweekly and titrate down their appointments as progress is made or increase treatment frequency if additional challenges or stressors emerge.

We utilize a HIPAA-Compliant teletherapy platform through our medical record, Simple Practice. Appointment reminders with video links go out 48 hours in advance of appointments and are unique links, meaning you will need a unique link for each session rather than using the same one over and over. If for any reason you do not receive the link, we can manually send the link over to you. Partners or family members who are not in the same location can join remotely but if insurance is being utilized for teletherapy, the client has to be residing in the state of Michigan. We have everyone sign a telehealth consent form so that telehealth is available to you even if you typically plan to come into the office because of snow emergencies, illness, scheduling challenges or other reasons that make it more convenient for you to have a remote session.
We accept many insurance plans, including many forms of Medicaid, Commercial Insurances and Medicare Plans! Please see our list of insurances accepted to review (link to insurances). There are plenty of Third Party Vendor insurers that will utilize a provider network, so just because your insurance is not on our list, does not automatically mean we cannot accept it! While it is your responsibility to know how your benefits apply to mental health services, we can verify that your insurance is active and an insurance we can accept on our side. We do not bill anything until after we receive your initial claim back that demonstrates your responsibility. Utilizing insurance means that insurance companies can request records and see diagnosis codes, dates of service and general themes covered in therapy. Should you choose to not use insurance for any reason, we can do private pay or sliding scale based on income (include sliding scale form).

Questions About Insurance & Payment

What type of insurances do you accept?

We have private pay options and sliding scale options based on income that range from 50-100% of standard office fee. Click here to learn more.

Please contact your insurance and ask about expected expenses associated with a 90791 (intake assessment) and 90837 (therapy session) that are most commonly billed for therapy. They vary widely from plan to plan and we have no idea of knowing deductible amount or responsibility until after we receive the insurance claim back from the insurer.

If we are in-network with both insurances, we can bill the primary insurance first and then once we receive the claim back, bill the second insurer. It can take 30+ days for this process to occur. If one of your insurances is Medicaid, we cannot balance bill you for any remaining balance your primary insurer does not pay.

Absolutely, several of our clients utilize HSA and FSA accounts and store their card associated with these accounts as their default payment method on our portal.

Everyone is required to have a credit card on file to cover costs associated with copays and missed appointments. Once we understand what your copay or financial obligations are from the health insurance company, we will put you on autopay to cover these charges and the amount due will be charged within 24 hours of the appointment. Should the charge decline, we will contact you to update your payment source. You will be able to view payment documents or submit a payment 24/7 via our online portal. Appointments cancelled with less than 24-hour notice are subject to the full session fee.
