Overview
At Josh Curie & Associates Therapy, we are committed to affirming, inclusive care for transgender and gender-diverse individuals. Gender support letters play an important role in helping clients access medically necessary gender-affirming care.
What Is a Gender Support Letter?
A gender support letter is a clinical document written by a licensed mental health professional. It confirms that an individual meets criteria for gender-affirming medical treatment and is prepared to move forward with care such as hormone therapy or surgery.
These letters are often required by:
- Medical providers
- Surgeons
- Insurance companies
Why They Matter
1. Access to Gender-Affirming Medical Care
Many medical providers follow standards outlined by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), which recommend a mental health evaluation and documentation before certain treatments. A gender support letter helps ensure you can access hormone therapy, chest surgery, or other procedures without unnecessary delays.
2. Insurance Approval
Insurance companies frequently require documentation confirming medical necessity before approving coverage for gender-affirming care. A well-written support letter can help streamline the authorization process. It is not uncommon for insurance companies to require 2 separate gender support letters and we can do both in-house if needed with separate clinicians.
3. Advocacy and Affirmation
Beyond being a requirement, a gender support letter is also an affirming document. It reflects your lived experience, your goals, and your readiness for care. When written thoughtfully, it serves as both clinical documentation and advocacy.
4. Collaborative Care
The letter helps coordinate communication between your therapist, primary care provider, endocrinologist, and/or surgeon. This collaborative approach supports safer and more comprehensive care.
